Joe Keating sets new 100,000m World Record

    London UK, Dec 17, 2011
  • For most rowers, the idea of rowing 100km in a single session seems insane. Yet in December 2011 a whole group of people rowed 100k together online using RowPro.

One of those ultra distance rowers was Joe Keating of London UK, the current 100km world record holder in the Lightweight Men's 60-69 category.

Joe seized the opportunity, and beat his own world record by a solid 4 minutes and 30 seconds, posting a new world record time of 7:15:05.8, a record since confirmed by Concept2.

Joe's 100k row started just after 8am, pausing only twice at the 25k and 40k marks. "There were no really difficult periods during the row" said Joe. "And rowing with others online certainly added to the experience."

Joe set an average pace of 2:10.5 and had an average heart rate of 139. Joe said he was aching all over the next day, but noted that "I felt a good deal less ill this time than when I last attempted the 100k."

"We warmly congratulate Joe on this outstanding achievement" said Pam Loeffen, Digital Rowing coordinator of Online Rowing. "No doubt there will be some interesting stories told about this 100k online row when Joe and his fellow rowers next chat."
